Fishing in Mongolia
- Duration 10 days
- Physical rating Medium
- Group size 2-6 Pax
Overview
This professionally organized fishing expedition is operated by Altai Expeditions, an experienced adventure travel company specializing in expeditions across the remote wilderness of western Mongolia. With knowledgeable guides, reliable logistics, and carefully planned camps, the trip offers anglers a unique opportunity to fish in some of Mongolia’s most pristine and untouched environments.
The expedition takes place on the legendary Uur River, one of the country’s most famous rivers for Taimen fishing. These cold, clear waters are home to the Taimen fish, the largest member of the salmonid family and one of the most sought-after freshwater fish in the world. Known for its power, size, and aggressive strikes, Taimen offers an exciting challenge for anglers. While the average fish measures around 30-35 inches, much larger specimens exceeding 50 inches are occasionally encountered in these remote waters.
Mongolia still holds some of the last healthy wild populations of Taimen, mainly in river systems that remain largely undisturbed. The fishing season typically runs from early August through mid-October, when river levels are stable and water clarity is excellent. Although anglers often encounter Taimen during the trip, landing one requires patience, skill, and persistence-making the experience both challenging and highly rewarding.
